In California, irrigated agriculture uses as much as 80 percent of all water used for businesses and homes. So it is very much in the Department of Water Resources’ interest to know what farmers are growing. In the summer of 2014, the agency instituted the most ambitious survey ever of crops planted statewide. It covers nine million acres of land devoted to grapes, alfalfa, cotton, plums, you name it – food for people and animals all over the world.
